Xiaomi Mi 4 is one of the best-selling and value for money smartphone currently available in market, it comes with power-packed hardware & amazing software and is currently priced at Rs.17,999 in India for the 16 GB version, while the 32 GB version is priced at Rs.21,999. Xiaomi Mi 4 runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box (with promised Lollipop update in near future) topped with Xiaomi's custom ROM, MIUI 6. Xiaomi is very open when it comes to Rooting the device, they even offer support and does not void warranty in case you mess up the device when rooting. Also Rooting Xiaomi device is very simple and has a very low chance of messing things up. Today I'm going to teach you, How to Root Xiaomi Mi 4 and How to UnRoot it.

Things You Need To Know:

  • The procedure laid down below is only for Xiaomi Mi 4 smartphone, please DO NOT try it on other devices, by doing so your device might get bricked.
  • Please ensure that your device has 80% or more battery remaining. We do not want your phone to run out of battery during the process, that can screw up things.
  • Back-Up all your important data/contacts etc, before beginning. Though it won't wipe your data, but I still recommend that you take proper back up just in case.
  • Install required USB drivers if not installed already.
  • Rooting Xiaomi Mi 4 will not void warranty, so relax!


How to Root Xiaomi Mi 4 

Follow the steps given below carefully. Please proceed at your own risk, though the process is 100% safe, we are not responsible if things go wrong.

Step 1: Download the Official Mi 4 Developer ROM from the official page.

Step 2: Once downloaded, transfer the zip file to your phone's storage.

Step 3: Go to Settings > About Phone > System Updates : Now tap on the menu (top-right) and tap on 'Choose update package'

You can also go to Updater app > Menu > Choose Update Package

Step 4: Browse to the location where you transferred the Developer ROM zip file which we downloaded earlier. Tap on it & Updater will start the process.

Step 5: Once Updater finishes updating, you'll see a button saying 'Reboot Now' - Tap on it.

Step 6: During the reboot, your device will automatically process the update, just sit back and relax.

Step 7: Once your device boots up, you've successfully installed the Developer ROM, everything will be as it was before the update (your data will be untouched) - Your Mi 4 is Rooted now, Congratulations!
Go to Security > Permissions > Root Access.
Now you can enable/disable Root access to your favorite apps. You can go ahead and download ROOT Checker App to verify root access (Please note that before using Root checker app, go to Security > Permissions > Root access and enable Root access for the app)


How to UnRoot Xiaomi Mi 4

Now that you've rooted your Mi 4, at any point if you feel like going back to normal or in simple words, UnRoot your phone, below are the steps which you can follow to go back to stable state.

Step 1: Download the Official Mi 4 Stable ROM from the official page.

Step 2: Once downloaded, transfer the zip file to your phone's storage.

Step 3: Go to Settings > About Phone > System Updates : Tap on the menu (top-right) and tap on 'Choose update package'

Step 4: Browse to the Stable ROM zip file which we downloaded earlier. Tap on it & Updater will start the process.

Step 5: Once Updater finishes updating, you'll see a button saying 'Reboot Now' - Tap on it.

Step 6: During the reboot, your device will automatically start UnRooting and will push you back to stable state, just sit back and relax.

Step 7: Once your device boots up, you've successfully UnRooted your Mi 4, you are back to normal state, running stable ROM with no more root access. Congratulations!
