Aadhaar card is a card which serves as Identity proof for India residents. This card is issued by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) which is a Government of India enterprise. So basically Aadhaar card serves as the proof of Identity and Address for residents of India and nowadays it is very important for Indian citizens to have Aadhaar card. If you don't have one then you can apply online.

Previously I wrote an article explaining How to apply Aadhaar card online and in this article I will explain How to update Aadhaar card details in case of any mistakes. I mean If your Aadhaar card have spelling mistake in your Name or mistake in Date of Birth, Address etc. then don't worry you can update Aadhaar card details online, just read the article.

What Details can be Changed?
Here is the list of details which you can update online. If your Aadhaar card have some other mistake which is not in the below list then you may have to visit nearest Aadhaar center and get it corrected there.
You can update the following data online.
- Name
- Gender
- Date of Birth (DOB)
- Address
- Mobile Number
How to Update Aadhaar card online
To make this tutorial simple, I'm dividing the process in three parts: First we will request for update, preparing required documents, uploading documents and sending request.
So as I said above that you can only update the Name, Gender, Date of Birth, Address and Mobile Number online. So if you want to update any of the above then continue reading.
1. Login with Aadhaar
Step 1: Visit Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal
Step 2: Enter your Aadhaar number and click on Send OTP
Step 3: You'll receive OTP or one time password on your mobile phone. Enter the OTP in the box provided and login.
Step 4: Choose the details you want to update, you can choose multiple boxes. After choosing click on submit.
Step 5: Now enter the correct details (Details you want it to get updated to), For example if you want to update the date of birth then enter the correct date of birth and click on submit.
2. Preparing Documents
Now this is a bit tricky and most important part. Now you have to upload scan copies of documents which serve as proof of the details, I mean to say If i'm updating Date of Birth then I'll have to provide the proof of birth date to support my request. So different details require different documents.
Below is the list of documents required for updating details, I'm listing only major documents but for the complete list of documents visit the UIDAI page.
Supported Documents for Proof of Identity
Documents containing Name and Photo. These documents are required for people who want to update their Name.
- Passport
- PAN Card
- Ration / PDS Photo card
- Voter ID
- Driving License
- Marriage certificate
- Kissan Photo Passbook
Supported Documents for Date of Birth Proof
Below are the documents which are supported for date of birth proof. People who want to update date of birth can upload any of the below.
- Birth Certificate
- Passport
- School Leaving certificate
Supported Documents for Address Proof
Documents containing Name and Address. People who want to update their Address can upload any of the below documents.
- Passport
- Bank Statement / Pass Book
- Ration Card
- Voter ID
- Driving License
- Electricity Bill (not older than 3 months)
- Water Bill (not older than 3 months)
- Telephone Landline Bill (not older than 3 months)
- Kissan Passbook
- Freedom Fighter Card
- Passport of Spouse
- Pasport of Parents (For minors)

3. Uploading Documents
Make sure to upload Self Attested Documents, Otherwise your Request will be rejected.
- Take a Xerox / Photo copy of required documents according to the details you want to update. For example if you want to update date of birth then you'll need to upload proof of dob and in case of Name you'll have to upload proof of Identity.
- The Photo copy must be self attested (Duly Signed by the holder of Aadhaar card, If it is not signed then the process will be rejected. So before uploading documents, the holder should sign the document)
- Now scan the self attested (Signed) document and upload it at UIDAI
Once you've completed all the three steps, Wait for 3-4 days and check status. keep checking status regularly.

How much time it takes for changes to apply?
After you've submitted your request with required documents and proofs, It will take around 20 days to 45 days for the process to complete. On completion of process, you'll receive a message on your mobile phone mentioning the date when your updated aadhaar card will be available for download.
How to get Updated Aadhaar Card?
Once UIDAI completes the process of updating aadhaar card, they'll send a message on the registered mobile phone number. In that message they will mention the expected date when you can download your aadhaar card. So on that date you can download the updated aadhaar card from UIDAI website.
Downloading Updated Aadhaar Card
- Go to eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
- Select Aadhaar option
- Enter your Aadhaar number
- Enter Name, Pin code etc.
- UIDAI will send one time password (OTP) on your phone.
- Enter one time password and click on 'Validate & Download'
To view the downloaded Aadhaar card on your computer, you'll require PDF reader (Adobe Reader) so just grab a free PDF reader before downloading.
Note: The Downloaded Aadhaar Card will be password protected and usually the password in your Pin Code.
Recently I used Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal for updating details of my Aadhaar card and it took around 25 days for the process to complete.
