Motorola recently launched the successor to their very successful model Moto G. The first generation device was an immediate hit in the Indian market when it was launched. It offered decent set of specifications at a very attractive price tag. This made the device a value for money that was hard to match. Now Motorola has launched the updated version of the Moto G and called it the Moto G 2nd generation. This new device runs the same hardware as the older device but addresses some issues with the previous device. They have added a micro SD card slot and increased the display size of the new Moto G. there are couple more changes on the new device. Bigger display
The previous Moto G came with a 4.5 inch display with 720p resolution. It was an IPS LCD panel so the display quality was pretty good. The pixel density was very impressive which translated into a very crisp display. This time they have gone for a slightly bigger display on this device on which they have retained the same resolution. This has caused some drop in the pixel density but it is still pretty good.
The 5 inch display is still crisp and uses an IPS LCD panel like the previous generation device. This would give you a well saturated and sharp display. The contrast ratios are decent and the brightness levels are impressive. This would allow for better sunlight readability. The large size would be good for people who like to read, watch videos or play games on their mobile phone. On top of that, the display comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection to keep scratches away.
Better design
Well we might have been a bit judgemental here as it depends more on one’s personal choices. Some people voted for the old Moto G’s relatively small size while others said that they like the new Moto G for its curved edges and sleek design. The old one was easy to slip into pocket or operate with one hand due to its relatively small size. The new one is bigger to house the larger display. It is slightly slimmer than the old one but the difference is insignificant.
The previous Moto G wasn't exactly very light and this one gains some more weight over that. To make handling easier, they have curved the edges on this new device. The overall shape of the Moto G has got resemblance to the new Moto X so clearly it has been made along the more premium design of the Moto X. The front of this new device comes with two speakers. One each sits above and below the display. The front camera is present just above the display in the middle. We like the design of the new Moto G as we have been hinting all through this piece of text and it is a considerable improvement over the old device.
High resolution cameras
The old Moto G came with a 5 megapixel primary camera. While the camera quality was decent for a 5 megapixel camera, it was still a pretty low end camera. Many of the rivals were offering cameras with better optics and high resolution sensors and the Moto G was getting left behind. This camera yielded a lot of noise as soon as the light dropped below certain level. Even in good light, the performance wasn't any good. This time however things have changed for good. They have gone for an 8 megapixel camera on the rear. This camera should be a significant improvement over what we saw on the previous generation Moto G. it comes with the usual set of features like Autofocus and HDR. You also get a LED flash with the primary camera. The secondary camera has got a boost as well. Earlier the Moto G used to have a 1.3 megapixel front camera. This one has got a 2 megapixel front camera.
More storage
The previous generation device was offered with 8 GB and 16 GB storage options. We won’t say the same about the 8 GB variant but we think that 16 GB of storage is plenty for many of the users. However there are still a large number of users who need more than that and until now, they had to refrain from buying a Moto G and were forced to look for alternatives. Now with the new Moto G, they have provided a micro SD card slot in the device along with 16 GB of internal storage. Even though we aren’t suggesting that you need that much storage, we can’t deny the advantages of having a micro SD slot.
You don’t always have to depend on the data cable to transfer data. You can simply use a memory card reader for fast data transfers even from older operating systems which do now support plug and play of your high end smartphone. It also helps at times when your device decides to die on you. At least you can pull out the memory card and access the data on other devices. And if you are the kind of person who keeps trying different ROMs on his/her device, you already know how much of a saviour it is when your new ROM won’t boot.
Price and availability
The device has been launched in India a couple of days back by Motorola. India is one of the first markets to get this device. Just like the previous device, it would be available via the online retailer Flipkart. The 16 GB device is priced at INR 12,999. There is no word on any 8 GB device yet and we aren’t exactly sure if there would be any or not. There are a lot of different panels and accessories available for the device via the same online store so that you can you can easily personalize your device.
