Asus Zenfone Zoom ZX551ML Smartphone Review

On 22nd January 2016, Asus launched its new flagship phone in the market; Zenfone Zoom. Asus claims it to be the slimmest smartphone with 3x zoom, is it really? We will find out soon. Recently the might smartphone Zenfone Zoom came our door and we decided to do a review on it after using it for a good number of days. So without further ado, lets begin.

Overview

Holding for the first time, the phone felt slim with a huge camera on the back. The sides/frame of the device is built with metal, which feels very nice to hold and surely isn’t painted like some of the phones which after months of usage can show signs of paint tearing off. The back of the phone has a leather premium finish, crafted with beauty.

Its really slim for a phone which has DSLR like shooting capabilities. The way they fitted a huge camera inside without making the camera stick out of the back is amazing. The leather craftsmanship gives the user a premium usage experience.

And to improve the user experience, Asus ZenFone zoom comes with a dedicated camera shutter and recording buttons at the side as you can see in the picture above. The physical buttons are built with metal too. So far the design of the phone feels great, now lets talk about the stuff that really matters .i.e Specifications.

Specifications

Asus Zenfone Zoom comes with a 5.5 inch Full HD screen with the resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixes and ppi density of 401. The glass used is Gorilla Glass 4. Asus ZenFone Zoom is powered by Android 5.0 Lollipop running Asus ZenUI which is equipped with lot of advance features. It comes with a 2.5 GHZ Intel Atom Z3590 Quad-core processor with PowerVR G6430 GPU. I ran a few benchmark tests, here are the results…

As you can see above, Zenfone Zoom stands good around other competitive phones. And we should not forget that this is a camera phone with best of both worlds. For Graphic performance, lets run some AnTuTu and NenaMark benchmarks...

The score above is pretty good, 60 FPS is gonna give you a great gaming time with no lags. I played a couple high end games on it with no lags whatsoever.

Besides this, the phone comes with a 4GB RAM and a internal memory choice of 32/64/128 GB. I don’t think you'll ever need a memory card for it, but if you do, ZenFone can be further expanded to 128 GB with SD card. Lets talk about the camera now…

Camera

ZenFone Zoom has a front camera of 13 Megapixels with f/2.7 – 4.8, 28- 84mm (3x Optical zom) sensor with laser auto-focus and quick image stabilization OIS and dual-LED (dual tone) flash. The front camera is a 5 megapixel with f/2.0 sensor which can capture amazing selfies and front recordings. This all enables the user to take excellent pictures and recordings. Here are a few sample shots...

Battery, Sensors and Connectivity

ZenFone zoom comes with a huge 3000 mAh battery, which lasted a full day for a heavy user like me. The quick charging mode allows the user to charge up to 60% in 40 minutes. The phone is equipped with Accelerometer, proximity, gyro sensors. On the connectivity part, the phone has 3G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 3.0, GLONASS and A-GPS.

Asus ZenFone Zoom comes in 2 color options, pure black and ceramic white. And as of now the phone is available for Rs.37,999 INR.

Conclusion

As compared to other phones in this price range, Asus ZenFone Zoom stands great. The picture quality and specially the zoom is real powerful. The phone is a bit heavy, but thats the price you have to pay if you want a big camera and features. The battery lasted pretty good for me. It barely lost 1% overnight (Wi-Fi and Data disabled at night) The ZenUI is very cleverly tweaked and optimized which runs very smoothly. The GPU performance is decent, it took everything I threw at it with ease. Overall a great phone for your daily usage and a camera ready for whenever you want to capture something beautiful.
